According to SEI the average Irish household spends about €1,800 per year one energy. This amount is an increase of 4% on what was spent in 2005 and its up 70% on 1990. When we examined at this €1800 in greater detail about €100 of the total is spent on lighting and a further €300 could be spent on cooking and general appliance adding up to about 20% of your total energy use. The remaining 80% or €1400 a year is spent on space heating (about 60%) and water heating (just over 20%).
The amount of energy and the money you can save depends on a number of things such as the size, shape, and construction of your house; the living habits of your family; the type and efficiency of your heating systems and the fuel you use.
The great thing about saving energy in your home is that once you have paid for the initial renovation work all the subsequent energy you conserve is money saved - and saving energy now will will save you even more in the future as energy prices and go up.
